By 1901 D. E. Gibson was one of the leading business figures in southern Colorado and his imposing stone mansion at Ninth and Greenwood was one of the show places in Canon City. The home, with servants quarters on the third floor, a wine cellar and billiard room in the basement was the scene of many social events at the turn of the century and beyond.
The property was later owned by Dr & Mrs James Benzmiller. A porch has been added on the west and the covered entrance on the east where ladies and gentlemen stepped from their carriages 80 years ago has been removed, replaced by a covered swimming pool. Otherwise there have been few basic changes in the house.
